Motivations

I'm driven by questions that need life-sustaining answers:

  • Who/what are we?

  • What are we made for?

  • How do we live a meaningful life?

  • How can we know the answers to these questions?

We’re trading the reality of God and the soul for the myth that technology will save us and calling it progress. In the process, we lose the knowledge and courage to speak meaningfully about ourselves—mind, body, and soul—and about the brilliant and beautiful life we can live together.

I work to help recover this knowledge. To make it public, and testable.

CCPL Annual Summit 2025

I joined the 2025 For the Good of the Public Annual Summit, hosted by The Center for Christianity and Public Lifespeak on a panel, “AI: Promise and Perils" with two leading experts, Dr. Jimmy Lin, (Founder & President of Rare Genomics Institute) and Molly Kinder (Brookings Institution).

The video should be posted on the CCPL website soon.

I recently spoke on a panel at Notre Dame’s Faith-Based Frameworks for AI Ethics summit, a gathering of scholars, technologists, and faith leaders committed to shaping the ethical future of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

& Formation

I am a philosopher working on the nature of consciousness, the soul, and the human person, and on what these realities reveal about wisdom, faith, technology, and human flourishing in contemporary life. Where the future of what it means to be human is being negotiated.

Scholarship & Public Life

I've published widely in philosophy of mind and character formation, including The Substance of Consciousness (2023). I translate my research into frameworks that leaders and institutions can use to cultivate cultures of wisdom, imagination, and responsibility.

Toward a More Meaningful Life

My public-facing work aims to cultivate wisdom and provoke more imaginative and insightful conversations about what matters most: knowing reality, meaning over distraction, hope for the future, and becoming the kind of people capable of a brilliant and beautiful life.

Where These Questions Lead

Questions about consciousness and the soul do not stay in one department. They shape how we think across the whole of life.

Knowledge

What can we know directly? What is rational agency? What makes judgment more than pattern recognition or social conformity?

Faith & Spiritual Formation

How does a true account of the person change how we understand attention, desire, worship, and the formation of the inner life?
